Courses focuses on freedoms of press, expression [

Activists, journalists, lawyers and others interested in ensuring a free, pluralistic and independent African media are invited to take this free online course.

The University of Witwatersrand Johannesburg offers the course “Media freedom and freedom of expression in Africa” through platform edX. The next class will run June 15 to Aug. 3.

The course aims to deepen the work of the late Southern African activist, Jeanette Minnie, who was devoted to robust civil society engagement with African media policy.

Participants will learn how to identify the principles and components of democratic media policy and practice, as well as strategies for effective engagement with these matters in African settings.

Students are expected to spend two to three hours a week for a total of seven weeks.
